Parathas are basically like tortillas but made with wheat flour. This twist of adding avocados to them makes them super buttery, without the butter and ends up being a healthier and vegan version of the same!
I was introduced to these yummy parathas by my in laws. They would make them almost on a regular basis. And the best part, if there are any left overs of them, they tend to remain soft, unlike other parathas which could turn hard. My mother in law in fact posted this recipe in her blog as well!
I have just made some minor changes and of course figured out another lazier version to make this simple recipe even more time efficient. You guys know me by now! Haha!
I am using food processor with the dough kneading attachment which makes it quick and requires less effort. I will also let you know the traditional method of kneading the dough with hand.
You will need:
For the dough:
1 avocado
1-2 tbsp chopped cilantro (optional)
Lime juice from ½ lime (to retain the green color of avocado)
1 tsp carom seeds (optional)
½ tsp cumin powder (optional)
½ tsp red chilli powder (optional)
½ tsp salt
1 cup wheat flour
¼ cup water (adjust according your dough consistency)
For cooking the parathas:
Oil (vegetable, canola or avocado)
Tips:
- You must have noticed that many ingredients are optional. If you want to keep it simple, you can just add the basic ingredients and still make the parathas. These additional items just make them more flavorful.
- You may have to adjust the water according to your dough consistency. If you are using the food processor with dough kneading attachment then you would need less water, If kneading the dough with hands, you may require more water, even upto ½ cup or so. Basically my advice is the slowly add water to the dough mixture and adjust accordingly. If too dry, add more water and if too sticky add 1-2 tbsp of flour.
Method:
Get your food processor ready with dough kneading attachment. Add in all the ingredients except for the water. Then give it a mix. Slowly add in the water to form a dough. Divide the dough into equal parts. I usually divide them to 8 parts and roll each part into a dough ball. Now time to roll the dough ball into parathas/tortillas. You can use flour to dust the rolling surface, to prevent it from sticking. Transfer the parathas to a hot pan. Apply oil on both sides. Once one side is cooked, flip the paratha and cook the other side.
Enjoy this paratha with a vegetable side dish like aloo gobhi, kaddu subzi, bhindi subzi and/or raita. You use it as a wrap for kathi rolls. You can check out these recipes in my blog as well!
ENJOY!
